Prof Dave Peck

Academic and clinical work.

I worked in  UK universities for over twenty years, and spent a similar amount of time in the NHS as a clinical psychologist, mainly in the Highlands of Scotland. I am an Honorary Fellow and Honorary Professor at Scottish universities and a Fellow of the British Psychological Society.

Research interests

My main interests are the use of new technologies in mental health, including telemedicine and computer-guided CBT; alcohol and drug use; the psychological impact of sports injuries; the health effects of relocating on retirement; outcome measures in mental health; common factors in psychological therapies; and the psychological impact of  occupational stress. I have obtained numerous research grants as principal investigator.

Examining and supervision

During my career I have had extensive experience as the examiner of research reports, including external examining for clinical doctoral theses at nine universities in the UK and abroad. I have acted as principal supervisor for numerous research projects at undergraduate, masters and doctoral levels.

Advisory work

I have been a member of many working groups, panels and committees for organisations such as the Scottish Government, Basque Government, World Health Organisation (WHO), National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), Scottish Inter-Collegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN), British Psychological Society (BPS), and British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Therapy (BABCP), amongst others. This involved my writing reports and commenting on draft documents.

Publications.

I have published four books, twenty book chapters, and over eighty papers in refereed professional and scientific journals. Other publishing activities include assistant editorship of an international journal, refereeing for papers submitted to journals, and book reviewing.

Key experience

This experience of examining, supervising, writing, editing, and providing advice to high level organisations has given me insight into the difficulties that people often have in conducting and reporting statistical analyses, and in expressing themselves in clear and  simple English.
